John Dewey est un des piliers du pragmatisme. Au centre de cette tradition, il y a l’enquête, c’est-à-dire la conviction qu’aucune question n’est a priori étrangère à la discussion et à la justification rationnelle. Dewey, fondamentalement, est un philosophe de la démocratie : La démocratie n’est pas une forme de gouvernement», aimait-il répéter, nul ne saurait donc y voir une figure historique du pouvoir, caractérisée par tel ou tel prédicat idéologique, philosophique ou institutionnel. Au contraire, elle est à elle-même sa propre norme, elle définit les conditions pragmatiques de la discussion rationnelle, et par conséquent de l’enquête comme forme élaborée et socialisée de l’expérience. Dans Le public et ses problèmes, Dewey montre plus particulièrement que la politique est une «expérimentation : les pratiques expérimentales s’appliquent aussi bien à la délimitation du privé et du public qu’à la détermination des intérêts communs, à la décision politique comme à la détermination de la loi. Destiné non pas aux gouvernants, mais au public, instance intermédiaire entre la société et le gouvernement, l’ouvrage entend restituer au public son pouvoir et ses compétences dont le prive la complexification de l’exercice du pouvoir. Il vise à restaurer la démocratie à sa source : la compétence de chaque citoyen.

Topics in Parallel and Distributed Computing provides resources and guidance for those learning PDC as well as those teaching students new to the discipline. The pervasiveness of computing devices containing multicore CPUs and GPUs, including home and office PCs, laptops, and mobile devices, is making even common users dependent on parallel processing. Certainly, it is no longer sufficient for even basic programmers to acquire only the traditional sequential programming skills. The preceding trends point to the need for imparting a broad-based skill set in PDC technology. However, the rapid changes in computing hardware platforms and devices, languages, supporting programming environments, and research advances, poses a challenge both for newcomers and seasoned computer scientists. This edited collection has been developed over the past several years in conjunction with the IEEE technical committee on parallel processing (TCPP), which held several workshops and discussions on learning parallel computing and integrating parallel concepts into courses throughout computer science curricula.
